Nature Itinerary

Fishing Fun
Fishing Fun

Located in the beautiful foothills of the Ozark Mountains, the Cherokee Nation includes 14 counties of scenic northeastern Oklahoma. It is a spectacular paradise for nature lovers, campers and water recreationists. You can indulge in everything from golf, fishing, camping, and rappelling to float trips down a waterway, and more. The crystal lakes, rivers, rolling hills, and the bountiful flora offers visitors the best in Nature adventures. White-tailed deer, scissor-tailed flycatchers, butterflies, and countless other species abound.

Day One

Play in the water at Lake Tenkiller located near Tahlequah. It’s a camper’s paradise, but if primitiveness isn’t your style, RV hookups and lodges are plentiful. Rent a boat or a WaveRunner® and have fun in the sun. The scenic rocky bluffs and the lush, serene forests surround you no matter where you are on the lake or lakeside.

Go scuba diving in Lake Tenkiller’s underwater scuba dive park. The lake is one of the deepest in the area, reaching depths of 165 feet. You’ll be intrigued by the rock cliffs and sloping hills that extend into the crystal clear water where visibility ranges from eight to 35 feet. You’ll also find some local history in an underwater town, complete with horseshoes, buggies, houses, farm equipment, a jailhouse, Native American pottery, jewelry, arrowheads and personal possessions left behind by settlers.

Day Two

Are you adventurous? Gruber Recreation Area is a 450-acre area perfect for off-road vehicles, mountain bikes, horseback riding, rock climbing and hiking. You’re guaranteed to have an action-packed day.

Want a more laidback day? Go fishing. Greenleaf State Park, about 30 miles from Tahlequah in Braggs, features a 900-acre sparkling lake filled with largemouth bass, crappie, sunfish, and channel catfish. Don’t let the big one get away!

Day Three

Experience the outdoorsman’s ultimate shopping experience... the Bass Pro Shop. Only 45 minutes away in Broken Arrow, it is a must-visit destination. The Shop is committed to protecting natural resources and preparing you for your outdoor adventures. Visitors from 8 years old to 80 enjoy this remarkable Shop, which is part museum, part art gallery, part education, part conservation, and part entertainment center.
